Tips
Looking for Jobs
You can browse for jobs on the city-wide jobnet database here.
We have compiled a list of useful websites which may be helpful if you want to search for jobs and information.
CVs
A CV should be no more than 2 pages long.
It should include your full name, address and contact details, as well as a personal profile, employment history, training & education, hobbies and interests. We do not advise you to put on your date of birth, marital status or health as these should not affect a job application. However occasionally a job advertisement may state that you need to be over a certain age for insurance or legal reasons but you could state this in your cover letter.
- Keep it simple and clear. Use the same size font, underline headings and the same spacing throughout
- Always start with you most recent employment and work backwards
- Ensure you do a spell check at the end and try to get somebody else to proof read your CV
- Never lie on your CV because if you get found out then it could lead to termination of your contract. Always be honest and positive
- Remember to write a cover letter with your CV (see below)
- We do not advise you put referees on your CV if you are sending your it speculatively to many employers. Instead you can put that references are available on request (see below for more information)
Cover Letters
- When sending a CV you should accompany this with a short, handwritten letter
- The cover letter should include the vacancy you are applying for, where you saw the advert and a paragraph giving information about yourself, stating any qualities and experience you have
- For your covering letter use plain paper not lined
- Write neatly and clearly
- If you do not know the person's name then letters to Dear Sir or Madam should end with Yours faithfully. If you do have a named person then this should end with Yours sincerely
Application Forms
- Do a photocopy of the blank application form so you can have a go and practice
- Complete forms using a black ink pen or type, this is so the form can be photocopied
- Always take a copy of your completed application form and keep it so you can refresh your memory if you are invited to an interview
References
- Generally you will need 2 references. Your first reference should be your current or most recent employer. The second reference should be a person who knows you well and can provide the employer with a good opinion about you
- You should never put a referee down without asking the person's permission first
Interview Tips
- Preparation is the key to successful interviews
- Do some research on the company, see if they have a website, find out what they are all about
- Prepare yourself for questions you might be asked
- Prepare some questions to ask them, to show that you are interested in the company and the position, but not too many as you don't want to interview them
- Ensure you know where, when and who you are meeting
- Plan your journey. If you are unsure of where the venue is then do a trial run. Allow plenty of time before you get there in case of heavy traffic. You should try arrive there ten minutes before the interview
- Think about what you will wear, dress appropriately and get your clothes ready the night before
Take any papers, certificates or other information you might have been asked to supply.
BE POSITIVE!
